"Laws alone were never enought to ensure the relative permanence of improvements." ~ Lind Sliver Dranoff

In an ideal society, every woman would have her rights protected, her potential fully realized, and she would be blessed to be the writer of her own destiny. However, as it stands today, there are still women of all ages in Canada, the Western world and beyond who endure gender and/or race discrimination, including inequality before the law, domestic abuse, and religious oppression only because they were born women.

It’s been proven by the behaviour of our successive governments that as leadership changes from one party to another, improvements in the status of women take steps forward or backward depending on the view of the current government. Even though we may have laws in place to protect women and their rights, enforcement of those laws has never been efficient or effective. As North American women, we understand that in order to help ourselves, we have to first be cognisant of our own needs, then move forward whether our government supports us or not.

All women are the creators and the foundation of community. Through thought, feeling and action, we weave a far reaching web, building a network of family, friends and associates to support and nurture each other and ourselves, knowing that what we do today always influences what’s to come in our future.

Mainstream media keeps Western society greatly informed about high-profile women, but, for the most part, women’s work is relatively invisible and not typically seen in the headlines.

Each woman invited to participate in this film is meant to represent the everyday change makers of our smaller Canadian communities. These women are found in every supportive and mindful circle; they are the profound thinkers and the wisdom keepers; they work with their strengths and they feel deeply. Each is a woman of deliberate action; they represent our grandmothers, our business associates, our mothers, the caretakers of our land, and the nurturers of our young, our sick and our dying. They exemplify our artists, social activists, our elected officials and our rising stars.

We will tell the stories of these compelling women, who outnumber those generally seen in the media. The men asked to join us will be those who support, encourage, promote and advocate for the women in their community.
